Caddy Liner Voucher Snowy Valleys residents with a FOGO collection service can access one annual digital voucher for a roll of compostable caddy liners. The Liner voucher is available via the SVC Waste app and can be redeemed at Council offices and resource recovery centres. Caddy Liner Voucher Guidelines * Only one voucher per household can be redeemed annually * You will need to open your SVC Waste App and show your digital voucher for staff to scan * If you don’t have an app supported device you will need to provide ID and proof of address for staff to redeem your voucher Additional rolls of caddy liners are also available for purchase from Council offices, libraires and resource recovery centres. The liner supplied by Council is a lime green compostable 8 litre bag made by Cardia Bioproducts (product number PSB-C-0121-A). A roll of 150 liners should last on average 1 year. If purchasing alternative liners from local supermarkets or online retailers they must be compostable to Australian standard AS4736. Anything else will contaminate the FOGO waste, adding to the processing cost. Handy tips ✔️ You can also use newspaper to line your caddy or use no liner at all (no plastic bags). ✔️ Clean your caddy regularly using hot soapy water. You can even pop it in the dishwasher. ✔️ Eat more of your food - Write a weekly menu plan and make a shopping list, so you only buy what you need. Recycling food is great, but eating it is better.
Community Recycling Centres (CRCs) are permanent drop-off centres for common household problem wastes that can’t be collected via council kerbside landfill and recycling collection services. NSW householders can drop off problem wastes at these centres year round, free of charge. To better protect our environment and the health of the community, the EPA is funding new and enhanced CRCs across NSW. Local councils and other organisations operate these centres in partnership with the EPA. Funding for the centres comes from the waste levy, as part of Waste Less, Recycle More. As a guide, this is a maximum container of 20 litres or 20 kilograms for each waste type. Some centres may accept other types of waste. Contact your local centre to find out if other items are accepted and if any charges apply. Handle and transport your items carefully. Protect your vehicle by placing items on a protective sheet or tray in the boot to capture any leakages or breakages. What about household chemicals? You can take household chemicals to a Household Chemical CleanOut event. This mobile collection service helps you safely dispose of a range of household chemical products, including household cleaners, pool and hobby chemicals and pesticides. CleanOut events are held at various locations in NSW on specified dates throughout the year. Who can use CRCs? Most Community Recycling Centres are open to all NSW residents. With the exception of Leichhardt and Cumberland, you do not have to be a local resident to use a centre. Community Recycling Centres complement the Household Chemical CleanOut program. Business waste Businesses are not eligible to use Community Recycling Centres and should contact a waste disposal service directly or visit BusinessRecycling. Why should I use these centres? * Most of the items accepted at Community Recycling Centres can be reused or recycled. Sorting waste and taking it to a recycling centre * Helps improve recycling rates * Saves water, energy and other valuable natural resources What happens to waste items after they have been dropped off? * Paints are mixed with other waste solvents and used as an alternative to fuel in cement kilns. The metal containers are recycled. * Lead acid batteries are sent to recyclers where the lead, acid and plastic are recovered and recycled. * Fluorescent tubes and globes contain mercury. Recyclers crush the tubes to separate the phosphor powder from the glass. They feed the powder through receiving containers, where it is filtered to capture fugitive mercury emissions. The mercury is then separated by distillation and sold for a range of industrial uses. The metals are also recycled. * Gas bottles have residual gas captured for reuse. Undamaged bottles are retested, restamped and entered into the hire industry. Damaged bottles are punctured and recycled as scrap metal. * Used oils are processed to become a lubricant or used for waste to energy.

Recycle App Makes Recycling Easier in the Snowy Valleys. Snowy Valleys Council is featured in a new photo recognition recycling app launched by the NSW Government and the Australian Council of Recycling. The new app, Recycle Mate will allow people to take a photograph of an item and immediately find out where it can be recycled in their NSW locality, based on geolocation and the recycling system available in that location. NSW has a strong history of recycling – most of the state has had kerbside collection services since the 1990s. It is estimated that between 10-15% of the materials collected in kerbside recycling is incorrectly disposed so cannot be recycled. The app identifies which suburb you’re in and provides tailored information to each council’s recycling collection system. The Recycle Mate app is free to download and is available on Apple and Android devices. Users simply download the app to their device and upload a photo of the product or packaging to learn how to recycle or dispose of it in the local council area. The app's database is constantly being updated as users share their questions about recycling. If an item isn't yet listed, users can automatically upload a photo to help build the app's intelligence. The NSW Government has supported the project with a $350,000 grant through the NSW Environment Protection Authority’s Waste Less, Recycle More initiative. Find out more at www.recyclemate.com.au [http://www.recyclemate.com.au]
Snowy Valleys residents can get a 10 cent refund for eligible drink containers at the Tumut Resource Recovery Centre. As part of the NSW Government’s container deposit scheme Return and Earn, a collection point has been established in the Re-Use shop at the Tumut Resource Recovery Centre. The NSW Return and Earn scheme will help to reduce the 160 million drink containers littered in our environment each year. Drink containers make up almost half of the volume of litter in NSW. Eligible drink containers include most between 150mls and three litres, uncrushed, unbroken and with the original label attached. For more information visit the Return and Earn [https://returnandearn.org.au/] website.
You can now take your old, but reusable items like tables, lounges, chairs, wardrobes and small items including footballs, gym weights, golf clubs and tennis rackets to the Re-Use Shop at the Tumut Resource Recovery Centre. The shop doesn’t accept mattresses, electricals (anything with a cord), battery-operated items, cutlery, books or any loose clothing. Your items will be assessed by the gate attendant, and all unaccepted items will be subject to the usual council waste fees or you can use your digital waste voucher.
